7/23/2008 Manny Ramirez, LF (Bos) Ramirez was out of Boston's lineup Wednesday against the Seattle Mariners with a sore knee. When asked if the slugger will be back for Friday's opener against the New York Yankees at Fenway Park, Red Sox manager Terry Francona said, "I'm hoping it'll be all right Friday. I don't know. I don't really have a good answer for that. I hope so."

Analysis: Ramirez said his knee has been bothering him for about a week. Jacoby Ellsbury replaced Ramirez in left field against Seattle. Ramirez was 4-for-8 in the first two games of the Seattle series, extending his hitting streak to 11 games while showing no signs of injury. He entered Wednesday batting .301 with a team-leading 19 home runs and 62 RBIs. The 36-year-old had played in 95 of Boston's first 102 games and hadn't sat out an entire game since June 18 at Philadelphia.
7/23/2008 Jorge Posada, C (NYY) Posada wants to put off surgery on his right shoulder even if it means sacrificing the start of next season. If he does play the rest of this year, it won't be behind the plate. On the disabled list for the second time this season, Posada had his throwing shoulder examined by New York Mets medical director Dr. David Altchek on Tuesday, and surgery was again recommended. An MRI showed fraying in the tendons around the labrum, but not a rotator cuff tear.

Analysis: In his 14th season, Posada is extremely proud about being a full-time catcher his entire career. But he said that if he is to continue playing this season, catching is "out of the question" for the remainder of the year. Posada said the Yankees agreed with his decision to keep playing even with the possibility of a six-month rehab looming after surgery. Posada said the shoulder doesn't hurt when he's swinging a bat but has gotten weaker because of his throwing.
7/23/2008 Josh Fogg, SP (Cin) Fogg will miss his next scheduled start for the Cincinnati Reds because of a split upper lip, suffered when he was hit in the face during batting practice. The right-hander chipped a tooth and needed 30 stitches to close the wound on Tuesday night. He was playing catch in the outfield, warming up for his between-starts bullpen session, when he was hit by Joey Votto's batted ball. The lip was badly swollen on Wednesday morning.

Analysis: Fogg was scheduled to start on Friday against Colorado. Instead, Edinson Volquez will take his spot. With the Reds having a day off Thursday, manager Dusty Baker had planned to push all of his starters back a day to give them time off. Instead, Volquez will throw on his normal four days of rest. Fogg will play catch on Friday and see how he feels.
7/22/2008 Jeff Clement, C (Sea) Clement left Tuesday night's game with the Boston Red Sox in the third inning after injuring his right hand when a foul ball ripped the finger nail off his thumb.

Analysis: With two outs in the top of the second, Boston's Dustin Pedroia hit a foul ball behind home plate that Clement chased to the backstop. Clement placed his right hand through the protective screen to brace himself and the ball clipped his hand as it fell just behind the screen. Clement, who was replaced behind the plate by Kenji Johjima, is day-to-day.
7/22/2008 David Ortiz, DH (Bos) Ortiz went hitless Tuesday night in another rehab appearance with the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs.

Analysis: It was Ortiz's fifth minor league game since he was sidelined May 30 because of a partial tear of the sheath that surrounds the tendon in his left wrist. "I feel good. I feel better everyday," Ortiz said before the game. The slugger is scheduled to make his third and final appearance for Portland on Wednesday. He is expected to return to the Red Sox on Friday for the beginning of a nine-game home series with New York, Los Angeles and Oakland.
7/22/2008 Ryan Zimmerman, 3B (Was) The Nationals reinstated Zimmerman from the disabled list and his rehab assignment with Triple-A Columbus on Tuesday.

Analysis: He had been sidelined since June 3, retroactive to May 26, with a small tear of the labrum in his left shoulder. Zimmerman was in the lineup and batting third.
7/22/2008 Erik Bedard, SP (Sea) Bedard got an MRI on his left shoulder Tuesday, but team physicians found no new causes for the nagging tightness and soreness the lefty is experiencing.

Analysis: Dr. Edward Khalfayan said the MRI confirmed the initial diagnosis of tightness in the shoulder and recommended that Bedard remain on his current rehabilitation program. Bedard has not started since July 4 and went on the disabled list July 10, retroactive to July 5. He briefly threw in the Mariners' batting cage under Safeco Field on Sunday, but didn't feel up to throwing on the field a day later. Bedard is 6-4 with a 3.67 ERA in 15 starts this season.
7/22/2008 Omar Vizquel, SS (SF) Giants manager Bruce Bochy sat down with Omar Vizquel on Tuesday and told the 11-time Gold Glove shortstop he will play less in the season's second half.

Analysis: The Giants are going for a youth movement and that means the 41-year-old Vizquel apparently will spend more time watching the likes of rookies Emmanuel Burriss and Ivan Ochoa at his spot in the middle of the infield.
7/22/2008 Eric Stults, SP (LAD) The Dodgers recalled left-handed starter Clayton Kershaw from Double-A Jacksonville on Tuesday and optioned Stults to Triple-A Las Vegas.

Analysis: Stults started Monday's game at Denver but was pulled after giving up three runs in 3 2-3 innings of the Dodgers' 16-10 win. In six starts this season, Stults is 2-2 with a 3.18 ERA and 25 strikeouts.
7/22/2008 Clayton Kershaw, SP (LAD) The Dodgers recalled Kershaw from Double-A Jacksonville on Tuesday and optioned Eric Stults to Triple-A Las Vegas.

Analysis: Kershaw was scheduled to start Tuesday's game against the Colorado Rockies. Kershaw, 20, was 0-2 with a 4.42 ERA in eight starts with the Dodgers earlier this year. He was sent to Jacksonville on July 2, where he was 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA in three starts for the Suns.
7/22/2008 Ryan Church, RF (NYM) Church, out with a concussion, was at Shea Stadium Tuesday to exercise but he was being kept from baseball activities for several days. Church said he was told to ``Lay low." "It's tough to do ... but it's something that's going to help me get back quicker.''

Analysis: Church is on the disabled list for the second time this season because he has been unable to recover from two concussions. He went back on the DL July 6, six days after he missed most of June following a May 20 concussion, his second in less than three months. Church thinks his next doctor's appointment is Thursday, when he could be cleared to resume baseball activities.
7/22/2008 Orlando Hernandez, SP (NYM) Hernandez, who is trying to come back from foot surgery last Oct. 18, was working out with Class-A Brooklyn.

Analysis: He is awaiting a specially designed shoe before he continues his rehab.
7/22/2008 Pedro Martinez, SP (NYM) Martinez tested the groin injury that forced him out of his last start on July 12 after four innings, throwing 56 pitches in the bullpen Tuesday.

Analysis: Martinez had a cortisone shot Thursday and was skipped in the rotation to give his groin time to heal. He said he feels, ``Real, real good,'' and that he will likely pitch Saturday or Sunday.
7/22/2008 Joel Peralta, RP (KC) Peralta, who was optioned Monday to Omaha when reliever Leo Nunez came off the disabled list, was recalled on Tuesday.

Analysis: Peralta was 1-2 with a 5.52 ERA in 24 relief appearances in two stints with the club in 2008.
7/22/2008 Jimmy Gobble, RP (KC) Gobble, who allowed 10 runs in one inning Monday against Detroit, was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a stiff lower back.

Analysis: Gobble was 0-2 with an 11.31 earned run average in 31 relief appearances. Opponents had a .318 batting average and a .561 slugging percentage against him. Gobble, a 27-year-old left-hander, was 4-1 with a 3.02 ERA in 2007 and led the Royals in strikeouts in 2006. Manager Trey Hillman said Gobble would report to Triple-A Omaha, where after a couple of days of rest he would throw off flat ground before throwing two or three bullpen sessions before getting into games.
7/22/2008 Josh Fogg, SP (Cin) Fogg was hit in the mouth by a ball during batting practice Tuesday, and was taken to a medical center where he got 30 stitches for a split upper lip.

Analysis: A ball hit by Joey Votto smacked Fogg, who was in the outfield during batting practice. Fogg left the field with the assistance of a trainer who held a towel in front of his face. Fogg is scheduled to start Friday against Colorado. He is 2-2 with a 7.09 ERA in seven starts and seven relief appearances.
7/22/2008 Joe Mather, RF (StL) The Cardinals brought up Mather from Triple-A Memphis on Tuesday.

Analysis: Mather, beginning his third stint with the team, was batting .244 with two homers and five RBIs in 20 games, and went 5-for-16 with a home run in four games with Memphis after being optioned last Friday.
7/22/2008 Adam Wainwright, SP (StL) Wainwright threw his first bullpen session Tuesday since going on the DL on June 8 with a ruptured tendon in the middle finger of his pitching hand.

Analysis: Wainwright threw 40 pitches at 70-75 percent effort, is scheduled for at least two more bullpen sessions on Thursday and Saturday, and could be back in the rotation in two weeks or so.
7/22/2008 Chris Duncan, LF (StL) The St. Louis Cardinals placed Duncan on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a bulging disc in his neck. It's the latest setback for a player who totaled 43 homers his first two major league seasons but has just six this year.

Analysis: Duncan, batting .248 with 27 RBIs in part-time duty, said the neck has been bothering him for a while but had been tolerable until after Monday night's game when he couldn't sleep and then woke up with stiffness. He also reported shooting pain down his right arm.
7/22/2008 Mitch Stetter, RP (Mil) The Brewers optioned Stetter to Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday, making room on the roster to activate Jeff Suppan to start against the Cardinals.

Analysis: Stetter was 2-1 with a 2.78 ERA in 23 appearances over two stints. He has held opponents to a .160 batting average, and went 1-0 with a 1.74 ERA since recalled on June 20, but was vulnerable because he has minor league options remaining.
